Duo kicked at the sand beneath his feet in frustration as he stomped his way along
the lakefront. He was out here filling the air with curses and
abusing the unoffending sand instead of doing what he really wanted
to do...throddle Heero senseless for being so insensitive and blind.
No matter how obvious Duo was, Heero never seemed to get the hint
but instead went on ignoring Duo like always.
Of course, Duo had considered the possibility that Heero was just not interested in Duo
as anything more than a friend. However, once this occurred to
Duo he chose not to think such things since it was rather disheartening.
Besides, Duo had convinced himself that if this was the case, which
he felt it was, then he would just have to make Heero want him by making
himself more appealing and pleasant than, say, Relena, Heero's only
other potential partner. Duo had reasoned that this was going
to be a simple task; however, he was quickly proved wrong as Heero continued
to show a lack of interest despite all the things Duo tried to do.
Duo's latest attempt to get Heero interested in him had involved making Heero's favorite
dish for lunch and offering him a massage. The meal had been
eaten in an ungrateful silence and the massaging hand had been rudely
shoved away. And so here Duo was, muttering to himself out of frustration
as he walked along the lakefront-his escape route from the unappreciative
audience back in the safehouse.
Duo stopped walking and turned towards the lake. He tried to suppress all the negative
emotions welling up inside of him as he savored the feel of the cool
breeze against his skin and the lulling sound of the waves lapping at
the shoreline. Duo managed to calm himself briefly but was immediately
brought back to his current problem as he realized that it would have
been nice to have someone to admire the beautiful scenery with.
Duo could feel all the familiar depressing ideas forming in his mind again and he found
himself unable to ignore his loneliness and aching need to be with
Heero. Duo sometimes surprised himself by the strength of his
feelings for Heero. Duo figured that since it had been so long
since he had loved someone that now he was doing it with avengence.
Deciding that a swim in the lake would be an effective way to take his mind off his problems,
Duo quickly took off his clothes and waded into the lake. As Duo's
body came into contact with the water he gave out a loud yelp, surprised
to find himself standing in very cold water. He stood motionless
for several moments, debating whether he should brave the cold water or
get out and return to his depressing musings. Duo eventually decided
to stay in the water and swim around a bit to warm up.
Decision made, Duo started swimming away from the shore, intent on getting a decent
work out. Staying within twenty feet of the shore, Duo swam around
for about ten minutes, relishing in the strenuous activity that caused
him to briefly forget his loneliness. Coming to a stop, Duo tread
water while deciding that he definitely had to make an effort to go swimming
more often for it was very relaxing.
Slightly bored with swimming laps, Duo suddenly wondered if he could swim to the bottom
of the lake, figuring it was possible since he was relatively close
to shore, which would mean that the lake would still be somewhat shallow.
Determined to find out, Duo dove underwater and quickly swam downwards.
Duo first began to realize that this was a stupid idea when he swam headfirst into a
huge, slimy patch of lake weeds. As Duo maneuvered himself into
an upright position his feet touched the bottom and he felt a surge of
elation run through him as he satisfied his curiosity concerning the
depth of the water.
By this time Duo was running out of air so he pushed off the bottom of the lake in order
to propel himself towards the surface. However, his upward momentum
was abruptly halted as he was yanked downwards by some weeds that had
gotten wrapped around his legs without him noticing it. Duo tugged
frantically on the weeds, trying to free himself. He started
to panic as the weeds refused to relinquish their hold on him.
Duo's lungs felt like they were about to burst and he attempted to fight his body's natural
inclination to inhale as he tried to loosen the slippery vines that
were clinging to his legs. Just as Duo managed to get some of the
weeds unraveled he lost the battle with his body and inhaled deeply. As
water filled his lungs, Duo's body tried to reject this unnatural intrusion;
yet,it was a losing battle and soon Duo's body began to relax under the
oppressive weight of unconsciousness. As Duo's mind started to slip
into oblivion, his last regret was that he had never told Heero how much
he loved him.
